AWARE: Helping Advocates Help Vulnerable Workers

Submitted by Johnson.Wendy@… on

A free outreach webinar for advocates to help vulnerable workers know and exercise their rights in the workplace.  Most employers are required to pay minimum wage and overtime to workers in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. Some employers are required to provide medical leave to eligible workers under the Family and Medical Leave Act. This free webinar is being offered by the US Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division to assist advocacy group representatives understand federal labor laws and expand their ability to help clients  who may have had their workplace rights violated.

The Wage and Hour Division is committed to protecting all workers in the U.S., including low-wage and immigrant workers who are among the most at risk. Most employers provide safe workplaces, comply with labor laws, and take their responsibilities seriously. However, there are some workers who are denied the basic rights afforded them under federal labor laws.
One of WHD's main objectives is educating worker advocates and others who regularly interact with at-risk workers, enabling them to more effectively guide workers who need WHD assistance. Exploited workers, for a variety of reasons, may not contact DOL or are hesitant to do so, making it difficult to get them the information and help they need. Join this webinar to help close this gap between workers who need help and the federal agency that is charged with ensuring their workplace rights.

Meeting details will be emailed after registration is confirmed.

YouthRules! Webinar for Employers

Submitted by Johnson.Wendy@… on

A free  compliance assistance webinar to help employers in all industries understand their legal obligations when employing young workers.  The Wage and Hour Division prioritizes protections for young workers. Employers are responsible for providing youths with a safe working environment and paying wages required under federal law. Young workers have the right to work where they are not at risk of workplace injury and where employers make safeguarding their safety and health a priority. This webinar will help employers understand federal labor laws and how they apply to the employment of minors, and will provide information and resources to help employers better identify work that is safe and that does not jeopardize minors’ health, well-being, or educational opportunities. Knowing the federal and state rules regarding young workers will enable the employment of minors in lawful work activities, and help ensure that they have safe and rewarding work experiences.

Minors are limited in the types of jobs and number of hours that they can work. The rules vary by age, and the requirements may be different if they work in agriculture. States may have their own set of rules that must be followed and are sometimes more stringent than federal law. To assist Oklahoma employers in recognizing differences between state and federal law, a representative from the Oklahoma Department of Labor will present during the webinar.

More information about youth employment can be found at www.YouthRules.gov.
Meeting details will be emailed after registration is confirmed.
