The course aims to equip civil society partners, social workers, employers and worker’s organizations to effectively assess and address cases of child labor within their communities. The modules consist of a live, instructor-led component and an ‘on-demand’ online component. This module helps participants to understand how a case of child labor is defined and why is it so important to address child labor. This module includes learning activities as well as an assessment activity.

This handbook provides consolidated guidance on the detection of forced labor among fishers. The handbook is aimed at both state authorities and at non-state actors directly engaged with fishers or otherwise concerned with labor and human rights in fishing. The Handbook is relevant for fisheries worldwide, but the tools it contains will require adaptation to each country’s legal frameworks and fishing industry characteristics. Part I of the handbook describes the broad legal and conceptual frameworks for understanding the characteristics of forced labor in fishing and Part II provides guidance on how forced labor detection can be integrated into the extant compliance efforts.

This paper is aimed at providing an initial picture of some of the key channels through which climate change is linked to child labor, and the broad implications for policy moving forward. This paper explains that while it is widely recognized that climate change is affecting the global labor force, its effects on child labor have received less research attention and cannot be directly derived from its effects on adult work, as the underlying drivers of child labor and its associated risks are quite different. This paper demonstrates that children are a population group particularly at risk from the system shocks caused by climate change, such as industrial disruption, food insecurity, and compromised health, with particular threats to the agriculture sector, where 70% of all child labor is located.

This issue paper addresses the twin challenges of child labor and education exclusion among indigenous children. The paper demonstrates that indigenous children face a higher risk of child labor than other children, and are often significantly over-represented in hazardous work and the worst forms of child labor. These children also face limited access to education, with particular limitations found among indigenous girls. Factors influencing this situation include land dispossession, climate change, migration, and constraints on traditional indigenous livelihoods

This study examines patterns in child labor, child employment and informality for 22 sub-Saharan countries using household survey data, seeking to understand descriptively the patterns in child labor, child employment and informality that are present in this data. This type of descriptive analysis appears missing in the literature, and it is hoped that the study will help frame the subsequent causal studies that will examine different ways to alter the patterns documented herein.

This handbook aims to improve and facilitate conducting research on forced labor. Due to a need for careful attention to key ethical and safety considerations to protect study participants and interviewers and to produce and use findings that will benefit the affected communities, this handbook helps researchers to identify ethical issues with research involving exploited individuals and provide user-friendly guidance to protect the safety of study participants and researchers. Guidance is provided in the categories of research design, research implementation and data collection, and data analysis and reporting.
