• Why: The purpose of this event is to educate on how the FLSA protects restaurant workers and what WHD can do to help protect your rights.

Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color with disabilities face unique systemic challenges as a result of their intersecting identities. Centuries of exclusive practices in the United States, such as redlining and employment discrimination, have resulted in a society where people of color with disabilities, particularly Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities, are at a particular disadvantage financially. ODEP’s LEAD Center will host a webinar on September 21 at 3PM ET in which attendees will learn about the financial conditions of people of color who live at the intersection of race, ethnicity, and disability.

The webinar presentation “Protecting Your Workplace Rights” will educate Community Based Organization and Advocacy Group representatives on the protections afforded to wage earners and job seekers. At the session attendees will learn about the laws OFCCP enforce and what to do if applicants or employees believe their employment rights have been violated.

This webinar will highlight the pervasive nature of trauma and adverse childhood experiences among youth and young adults with disabilities and explore how trauma-informed care practices can be applied to workforce systems to help decrease barriers to employment for youth with histories of trauma. Speakers will discuss innovative and promising trauma-informed care and culturally responsive practices being used by states to fulfill the spirit of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) by improving access to employment among youth who have historically experienced barriers.
