Before embarking on a claims status project, it’s essential to know that it will be an operational endeavor as much or more so than a technology project. Depending on the depth of your department’s documentation, your team might need significant time to define the current operational processes to understand the ways in which a claim might be delayed.
The overall time to complete a project like this will vary depending on the complexity of your state’s policies and processes, your existing documentation, and your system’s overall modernization. But in general, expect multiple months of defining requirements and project scope, followed by additional months for technology implementation, training the staff, and roll out. The end-to-end timeline could take up to a year or more, depending on the state of your system’s data.
One final note is that a holistic claims status project is a large undertaking. If there are pressing needs or time constraints, the scope can be limited to speed up delivery. The state of California was able to launch a set of statuses related to PUA within about eight months by focusing efforts on the highest-volume issues claimants were facing.
