Gulf Coast art created by Job Corps student in Guthrie, Okla., used in award honoring US Labor Department employees for service during BP oil spill

WASHINGTON Malcolm-Jamal Warren, a student at the Guthrie Job Corps Center in Guthrie, Okla., created a unique picture that depicts the beauty of the Gulf Coast, which has been used as part of an award honoring the service and dedication of U.S. Department of Labor employees during the aftermath of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster.

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement on the April 2011 Employment Situation report released today:

"Our nation's labor market registered encouraging job growth in the month of April. Nonfarm payroll employment added 244,000 jobs, exceeding expectations, with the private sector adding 268,000 jobs. The unemployment rate edged up to 9.0 percent.

"Our nation's labor market improved notably in the month of March. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 216,000, and the unemployment rate decreased to 8.8 percent. Over the last four months, the unemployment rate has fallen by a full percentage point – its largest decline since 1984.

"The unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percent to 9.0 percent, down 0.8 percent in the last two months. The private sector added 50,000 jobs, and revisions indicate 1.1 million jobs were added in 2010. While there is still work to be done, the data show the unemployment rate fell in January because more people are working and not because people are leaving the labor force.
