What to Expect Next

Now that you have your claim number, this page provides basic information on what to expect next and will help you understand the claims process. Your case falls under one of two categories, as distinguished by items 1a and 1b below:

One

What status is my claim in right now?

1a): Your claim has been administratively closed. While in this status, you may still receive medical treatment through OWCP, for your work injury up to an amount not to exceed $1500. If you believe that your medical bills will exceed $1500, you should submit a report from a qualified medical doctor1 containing 1) a description of your work injury, 2) a medical diagnosis, and 3) an explanation of how your medical condition was caused by the claimed work event(s). Other information may also be required, as determined by the OWCP claims examiner.

OR

1b): Your claim is under development. Additional evidence is required to accept your claim. For your claim to be accepted, you should submit a report from a qualified medical doctor1 containing 1) a description of your work injury, 2) a medical diagnosis, and 3) an explanation of how your medical condition was caused by the claimed work event(s). Other information may also be required as determined by the OWCP claims examiner. If you have filed a CA-1 traumatic injury claim and require immediate medical attention (i.e. within 7 days following the date of injury), you may request an Authorization for Examination and/or Treatment Form CA-16 from your employing agency.

How can I submit documentation to OWCP?

To submit documentation related to your case, you can electronically upload information to your case file using the Web-Enabled Document Submission (WEEDS) portion of OWCP's Employees' Compensation Operations and Management Portal (ECOMP). Instructions for uploading information to a case file can be found on the ECOMP home page. Your physician may also use ECOMP to submit medical reports to your file.

You may also mail information to: U.S. Department of Labor, OWCP/DFEC, PO Box 8311, London, KY 40742-8311. As is the case with anything you send to OWCP, please note your claim number on every page, send only single sided copies, and be sure to keep a copy for your records.

Where can I find information on my claim?

You can view your case, the current status of any disability claims or medical bills submitted in your claim, or other information via the ECOMP Dashboard.  For help registering or using ECOMP view our video tutorials. To access information about your FECA claim(s), you must verify your identity in ECOMP after you register for an account. The “IDENTITY VERIFICATION” tab under “INJURED WORKER” includes information on identity verification. Electronic communications are faster than paper communications, so we encourage you to verify your identity in ECOMP.
