A critical lesson comes from thinking about the long-term sustainability of the pilot projects from the beginning. Even with Verité’s standing and reputation, it was initially difficult for their staff to establish partnerships with the suppliers of international coffee roasters in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. However, once the pilot programs had been agreed upon, the project should have considered the continuity of the training courses and other initiatives and discussed how the programs could be maintained over the medium to long term.
