Lesson-101355-32
The project succeeded in mobilizing the actors of the criminal system and parents of slaves to address slavery. The project also attempted to mobilize slavers to fight against slavery by sensitizing traditional leaders and chiefs about the importance of recognizing the rights of “wahaya” (girls and women bought and exploited as property by many dignitaries, mostly religious leaders or wealthy men, who use these girls and women for free labor and for the sexual gratification of their masters). While challenging, the project had some degree of success. This promising practice could be adapted to other projects that seek to work with key local actors.
