OSHA News Release: US Department of Labor's OSHA launches focused enforcement program to prevent injuries and fatalities in North Dakota's high-hazard industries [07/15/2014]

BISMARCK, N.D. — Since January 2012, 34 North Dakota workers in the oil and gas and construction industries have died because of work-related injuries. During that period, their deaths accounted for 87 percent of all North Dakota fatalities investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Health and Safety Administration.

COOLVILLE, Ohio — Two workers were free climbing, or climbing without safety lines, a 195-foot communication tower under construction without adequate fall protection in Coolville. As a result, Morlan Enterprises has been cited for one willful and eight serious safety violations by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA has proposed penalties of $52,500.

OSHA News Release: US Department of Labor's OSHA cites 8 employers for safety violations following death of worker who fell 29 feet at Texas construction site [07/14/2014]

AUSTIN, Texas — The Underwood Group Inc., along with seven subcontractors, was cited for safety violations by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration for failing to provide workers with required fall protection equipment. As a result, a worker fell 29 feet to his death at a condominium construction site in Canyon Lake. The proposed penalties total $53,480.

Proposed penalties total $305,100.

OSHA News Release: Workers exposed to grain bin entrapment at Sabina Farmers Exchange [07/10/2014]

SABINA, Ohio — Three employees of Sabina Farmers Exchange Inc. in Wilmington were found working inside a grain storage bin while a mechanical sweep auger, a machine used to push grain remaining at the bottom of a storage bin toward the bin's opening, was operating. This exposed the workers to severe injury and death by being engulfed in flowing grain. The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration has cited the company for three repeat and six serious safety violations at the company's grain bins in Wilmington and Sabina because of the complaint inspection.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Sterilite Corp., doing business as Sterilite of Alabama LLC, and Marathon Staffing Corp. Inc., for 13 safety and health violations. OSHA initiated the January 2013 inspection at Sterilite's plastics manufacturing facility in Birmingham as part of its National Emphasis Program on Amputations and regional emphasis program to limit worker exposure to high noise levels.

OSHA News Release: US Department of Labor's OSHA cites R.E. Arnold Construction and Suntree Technologies for willful, serious safety violations following worker injury [07/09/2014]

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — An employee of R.E. Arnold Construction Inc. was trapped when the wall of an excavation he was working in collapsed around him. The incident occurred as the employee removed dirt from a storm filtration system at the company's work site, and the local fire and rescue team had to remove the employee, who left the scene in critical condition. As a result, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited R.E Arnold with one willful and two serious safety violations.

NEW YORK — Workers demolishing a three-unit, three-story residential building in Brooklyn's Prospect-Lefferts Gardens section were exposed to potentially fatal falls due to their employer's failure to provide and ensure the use of lifesaving fall protection. As a result, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed $45,200 in penalties against Brooklyn contractor US Demco of Brooklyn Inc. for one willful and seven serious violations of workplace safety standards.

TAMPA, Fla. — Burgos Construction Corp. has been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration for four willful, one repeat and two serious safety violations after OSHA inspectors observed employees performing residential construction without using a fall protection system at four work sites in Lithia, Tampa, Riverview and Land O' Lakes. The company was hired to build a new apartment complex in Tampa and work on three new residences.

SMYRNA, Ga. — Jose M. Hernandez Cruz, doing business as JA Siding Construction Services LLC, of Marietta, has been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration for three repeat and four serious safety violations. Citations were issued to the employer for exposing workers to falls and other hazards while employees were installing siding at a new residence on Westwood Road SE in Smyrna. OSHA began its inspection in February 2014 as part of the region's emphasis program on falls in construction. Penalties total $42,240.
