US Department of Labor renews ‘Star Level’ designation of Wieland Metal Services LLC in Warwick for workplace safety, health achievements
Participant: Wieland Metal Services LLC. Warwick, Rhode Island.
Description: Wieland Metal Services LLC employs about 55 workers at its Warwick site. The company processes metal strips, foil, and sheets from rolls of copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and a variety of alloys through precision slitting, traverse winding/welding, and cut to length sheeting.
Duration: OSHA first recognized Wieland Metal Services LLC in 2019 as a “star” site – the highest level of recognition that the agency’s Voluntary Protection Programs offers. The facility earned its latest VPP star renewal following an onsite evaluation in March 2022 by a team of OSHA safety and health experts.
Background: OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs recognize and promote effective worksite-based safety and health management systems. In the VPP, management, labor and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented comprehensive safety and health management systems. Approval into the VPP is OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have created exemplary worksite safety and health management systems.
Quote: “The continued level of workplace safety and health practiced by recent participant Wieland Metal Services is commendable,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Galen Blanton in Boston. “Site leadership and employees work to continuously improve processes. Since their last reapproval they have especially focused on improvements to machine guarding and involving employees in development of material handling and ergonomics training for new hires.”
