Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announces new appointments to Labor Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations and Trade Policy

WASHINGTON — Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced the appointments of four additional members to the Labor Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations and Trade Policy.

The new members include Veda Shook, president of the Association of Flight Attendants; Raymond Hair, president of the American Federation of Musicians; Lee Moak, president of the Air Line Pilots Association; and Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union.

US Labor Department publishes revised list of products made with forced or indentured child labor

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of International Labor Affairs will publish a revised list of products that federal contractors must certify under Executive Order 13126 are not produced with forced or indentured child labor. The list will appear in the May 31 edition of the Federal Register.

US Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis joins President Obama in El Salvador to highlight labor solidarity in protecting migrant workers rights

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and El Salvador Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugo Martinez today signed a new agreement that will make it easier to protect the rights of citizens of El Salvador who work in the United States. Secretary Solis is in El Salvador to strengthen partnerships with the government, having joined President Obama for part of his Latin America trip.

US Department of Labor presents Iqbal Masih Award to Liberian workers group for efforts to combat exploitive child labor

WASHINGTON — Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has presented the 2010 Iqbal Masih Award for the Elimination of Child Labor to the Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia.

"This award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of the Firestone Agricultural Workers Union to combat the worst forms of child labor internationally," said Secretary Solis. "The group serves as a model to others, showing that progress is possible and worth the effort."

US Department of Labor announces a grant of more than $5 million for Better Work program in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a grant award of more than $5.3 million to the International Labor Organization to support the global Better Work program by implementing projects in Bangladesh and continuing projects in Cambodia and Vietnam. US Department of Labor announces $640,000 grant to implement labor project in the Republic of Maldives

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $640,000 grant award to the International Labor Organization to implement a project on fundamental rights, labor law and administration reform in the Republic of Maldives. The grant was awarded by the department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs.

The project will assist the government of Maldives in developing a well-functioning system of labor relations, labor law and labor administration.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced the award of $40 million in grants by the U.S. Department of Labor in 2010 to combat exploitive child labor in 12 countries. The grants will offer children access to educational and training alternatives, help improve the livelihoods of their households so their parents can meet basic needs without relying on child labor, and build local capacity to scale-up and sustain efforts to eliminate exploitive child labor.

US Department of Labor and US Trade Representative meet on US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement

MANAMA, Bahrain — The United States and Bahrain convened a meeting of the Subcommittee on Labor Affairs of the U.S.-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement on Sept. 20. Representatives at the meeting reaffirmed their commitments under the agreement to recognize and protect the rights stated in the International Labor Organization's Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

US Department of Labor launches initiative to combat child labor in cocoa growing regions of Ghana and Cote dIvoire

WASHINGTON — Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced a $10 million grant to fund a new Framework of Action to eliminate the worst forms of child labor in the cocoa industry in Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. Together the two countries supply more than half of the world's cocoa. Labor Minister E.T. Mensah of Ghana, Labor Minister Emile Guirieoulou of Cote d'Ivoire, and representatives of the international chocolate and cocoa industry joined Secretary Solis in making renewed commitments of resources to address the problem.

US Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announces labor consultations with Guatemala under CAFTA-DR agreement

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced that the U.S. government has requested labor consultations with the Government of Guatemala under the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). This is the first time that the United States has requested consultations under the labor chapter of a U.S. free trade agreement.
