U.S. Department of Labor Investing More Than $27 Million In Grants to Support USMCA

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced it is providing up to $27.2 million in grant funding to help Mexico meet its labor obligations under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), including the effective enforcement of its labor laws and addressing child labor and forced labor in its supply chains.

Grant activities will focus on developing centers that educate workers on their rights, train them to identify potential labor law violations in workplaces, and assist workers to submit and track well-supported, well-articulated claims to initiate labor inspections and pursue legal remedies.

US Labor Department’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs reports 16 countries made significant advancements to combat child labor in 2015

WASHINGTON – ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ Miguel Hernandez is 12 years old and already an experienced miner. Instead of going to school, he has worked for years –11 hours a day – extracting precious gems in the mines of Bolivia.

Across the ocean, Salay Ry has spent years laying bricks in Cambodia to help repay a family debt. At 13 years old, his education takes a back seat to his family’s subsistence. These stories of child exploitation are far too common, and two reports released today seek to bring greater awareness and attention to the problem.
