US Labor Department awards $10.5M in workplace safety and health training grants to 80 nonprofit organizations to help high-risk workers, employers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded $10.5 million in one-year federal safety and health training grants to 80 nonprofit organizations across the nation for education and training programs to help high-risk workers and their employers recognize serious workplace hazards, implement injury prevention measures and understand their rights and responsibilities.

Bowling center mechanic's strangulation death a 'preventable workplace tragedy

BROWNSVILLE, Texas A 29-year-old man working at a Brownsville bowling alley died when his shirt collar tangled in a faulty pinsetter, strangling him as the machine twisted the collar tighter.

Hired part-time as a mechanic, Vidal Garcia had worked at Galaxy Bowling Center for four months before the accident on March 5, 2015. He was doing maintenance on an automatic bowling pinsetter, machine that picks up and clears fallen pins and sets them for the next bowler.

NEW YORK — For the second time in two years, a U.S. and international home decor manufacturer and distributor has shown that it lags in employee safety.

A U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection of New York-based Idea Nuova's 302 Fifth Ave. showroom found aisles clogged with merchandise, including beanbag chairs, and an emergency exit blocked by disco balls, desks and lamps, conditions that could prevent a swift workplace exit in an emergency.
