The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a useful method to request information from agencies that you cannot easily find or is not available online. This page is intended to help you find that information and be your "one-stop-shop" for answers to common FOIA requests that the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management receives on a regular basis.
The Freedom of Information Act provides that any person has the right to request access to federal agency records or information. Like all federal agencies, the Department of Labor (DOL) is required under the Freedom of Information Act to disclose records requested in writing by any person. Please note that agencies may withhold information pursuant to nine exemptions and three exclusions contained in the statute.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM) is organized into a number of Centers and Offices.
If you know which Center or Office maintains the records you are seeking, please include that information in your FOIA request.
You may submit a FOIA request to the Department of Labor online, via postal mail, via fax, or via email. Learn How to Submit a FOIA Request
Should you have questions or concerns regarding an in-process FOIA request you may contact OASAM's FOIA Service Center.
Frequently Requested Information
If you are seeking the following information, you do not need to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request:
Job Applications, Employment and Pay Records:
Employment and Pay Information from Former Non-Government Employers
OASAM OHR does not have access to your employment records from a private or non-government employer. To get a copy of your non-government employment/pay history, we recommend you visit your local Social Security Administration office or visit https://www.ssa.gov/. You can request your Social Security Earnings Information and it will contain the names and addresses of your former employers along with your pay information for the years you specify in your request.
Former- and Non-DOL Federal Employees
The Department of Labor, like other federal agencies, only stores your employment records from federal employment and it only maintains that information while you are employed with the Department of Labor. Once you transfer to another agency, leave federal service or retire, your electronic Official Personnel Folder (OPF) is then either transferred to your new employing agency and must be requested from them, or it is transferred to the National Archives for storage. Through the archives, you can also request a copy of your Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), as well as any historical and deceased personnel files.
- The Official Personnel Folders (OPFs), including SF 50s, for most former civilian Federal employees are stored at the address below. Please mail your request to:
National Personnel Records Center (NPRC)
1411 Boulder Boulevard
Valmeyer, IL 62295
Or you may fax your hand signed request to the NPRC at telephone number 618-935-3014. More information is available on the NPRC website.
The location of records of former military employees varies depending on the branch of service and date of separation from service. Please visit NARA’s site on Official Military Personnel Files (OMPFs) for details.

Current DOL and Federal Employment Records
Current DOL employees can access their Official Personnel Folder (OPF) via the eOPF system on LaborNet. Other federal employees should have access to the eOPF system from their current employer. Corrections to your records should be discussed with your servicing personnel office. It is highly recommended that employees download a copy of their records regularly for their use.
- FedScope is a data repository that allows the public to extract their own federal employment reports by factors such as age, length of service, location and type of appointment.
Pay Records
Current federal employees can print earning and leave statements, create and delete pay deductions, review their FEHB and TSP information, and access their pay and tax information on the National Finance Center's Employee Personal Page (EPP). This system is available 24/7.
Job Application Information
Many job applicants request a copy of their previous application documents using the FOIA process but this is unnecessary. Your account in USAJobs maintains a record of all of your applications, your resumes (if you have created more than one), and any other previously uploaded documents or supporting information you may have submitted. You can immediately access all of your documents and get the status of any of your application(s) from the system at any time, from any computer.
