Oversight unit tops 800 convictions this decade

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) today announced its criminal enforcement data for October 2007. OLMS obtained 16 indictments and five convictions during the first month of fiscal year 2008, and court-ordered restitution in October amounted to $63,499. These indictments and convictions primarily involve union officers and employees who have embezzled union funds.

HOUSTON — Allied Home Mortgage Corp. in Houston has paid $1,855,518 in back wages after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division found 588 branch managers, loan officers, loan processors and clerks, who were performing inside sales work at the company, had not been properly paid.

U.S. secretary of labor extends operations of EEOICPA ombudsman

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today extended the term of the Office of the Ombudsman for the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program until Congress passes legislation to make the office permanent.

The Defense Authorization Act of 2005 created the Office of the Ombudsman for a three-year period to provide information on the benefits available under Part E of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) program, and the office was set to expire on October 28, 2007.
