17,000 homeless and at risk veterans to benefit from more than $28 million in US Department of Labor job training grants to continue existing programs

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced 122 grants totaling more than $28 million to provide approximately 17,000 veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless with job training to help them succeed in civilian careers.

The grants are being awarded under the U.S. Department of Labor's Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program to continue successful programs into second and third years. Funding includes $4,335,775 for the Homeless Female Veterans and Veterans with Families Program and $3,882,443 for the Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program, which helps veterans who have served time in justice facilities.

"The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program is recognized as an extraordinarily efficient and effective program, and is the only federal program that focuses exclusively on employment of veterans who are homeless," said Secretary Solis. "I am pleased that the department can assist these veterans and their families."

Second and third year funds are being awarded to state and local workforce investment boards, local public agencies and nonprofit organizations, including faith-based and community groups, that demonstrated through first year funding that they can administer effective programs and are familiar with the geographic areas and populations to be served.

Through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, homeless veterans may receive occupational, classroom and on-the-job training, as well as job search and placement assistance, including follow-up services. Grantees under this program coordinate their efforts with various local, state and federal social service providers. More information on the Department of Labor's unemployment and re-employment programs for veterans is available at http://www.dol.gov/vets/.

Editor's Note: Lists of grantees and award amounts follow this news release. If the name of an organization appears more than once, it has more than one grant, each serving a different sub-population of veterans.
