4,000 veterans to benefit from $9 million in US Department of Labor job training grants to continue existing programs
WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced 22 grants totaling more than $9 million to provide approximately 4,000 veterans with job training to help them succeed in civilian careers. The grants are being awarded under the U.S. Department of Labor's Veterans Workforce Investment Program to continue successful programs into second and third years.
"Our veterans sacrifice so much for our country, so it is important that we provide assistance to them when they return home from active duty," said Secretary Solis. "These grants will help veterans access the resources they need to find good jobs and build a bright future for themselves and their families."
Second and third year funds are being awarded to state and local workforce investment boards, local public agencies and nonprofit organizations, including faith-based and community groups, that demonstrated through first year funding that they can administer effective programs and are familiar with the geographic areas and populations to be served.
The Veterans Workforce Investment Program emphasizes training for veterans who are interested in "green" jobs that are currently available in the marketplace or expected to be soon. Such jobs include those related to energy efficiency and renewable energy, modern electric power development and clean vehicles.
Grantees under this program coordinate their efforts with various local, state and federal social service providers. More information on the Department of Labor's unemployment and re-employment programs for veterans is available at http://www.dol.gov/vets.
