U.S. Department of Labor to Host Event for Current and Former Nuclear Weapons Workers in Middle Island, New York
MIDDLE ISLAND, NY – The U.S. Department of Labor will host an event on Thursday, May 2, 2019, in Middle Island, New York, to discuss the benefits available to current and former nuclear weapons workers from covered facilities, and their families, under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will present information on their roles in the program.

This event is open to the public and pre-registration is not required. Services are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Department of Labor staff will provide information, answer questions, provide claim status updates, and help individuals file new claims.
"The U.S. Department of Labor encourages all former nuclear weapons workers and their families living in New York to attend this event and learn more about the benefits they may be entitled to under the act. Interested individuals can either file a claim at the event or obtain information about existing claims," said Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Director Rachel P. Leiton.
Covered facilities are all in the state of New York and include:
- Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton;
- American Machine and Foundry in Brooklyn;
- Baker and Williams Warehouse in New York City;
- Burns & Roe Inc. in Maspeth;
- Environmental Measurements Laboratory in New York City;
- Fairchild Hiller Corp. in Farmingdale;
- General Astrometals in Yonkers;
- International Rare Metals Refinery Inc. in Mount Kisco;
- New York University in New York City;
- Radium Chemical Co. in New York City;
- SAM Laboratories in New York City;
- Staten Island Warehouse in Staten Island; and
- Sylvania Corning Nuclear Corp. in Hicksville/Bayside, New York.

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act provides lump-sum compensation and medical benefits to current and former nuclear weapons workers whose illness is the result of working in the nuclear weapons industry. The program has paid more than $495 million in compensation and medical benefits to 5,494 claimants living in New York, and more than $16 billion nationwide.
