U.S. Department of Labor to Host Event in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, For Current and Former Nuclear Weapons Workers
NEW KENSINGTON, PA – The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) will host an outreach event on Aug. 22, 2018, in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, to inform current and former nuclear weapons workers from 25 facilities in the state about the benefits available to them under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). Workers' family members may be entitled to benefits and are encouraged to participate.
Covered facilities include Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. in Apollo and Parks Township, Westinghouse Atomic Power Development Plant in East Pittsburgh, Westinghouse Nuclear Fuels Division in Cheswick, and Aluminum Co. of America – Alcoa in New Kensington.
"Former nuclear weapons workers and their families living in Pennsylvania are encouraged to attend this event and learn more about the EEOICPA benefits for which they may be eligible. Staff will be on-hand to assist those seeking to file a new claim or to obtain a claim status update," said Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) Director Rachel P. Leiton.
Administered by DEEOIC, the EEOICPA provides lump-sum compensation and medical benefits to current and former nuclear weapons workers whose illness is the result of working in the nuclear weapons industry. To date, the program has paid more than $129.3 million in compensation and medical benefits to 1,138 claimants living in Pennsylvania and more than $15.2 billion nationwide.
Staff will provide information regarding the mission of the EEOICPA and at the conclusion of the presentation they will be available to answer questions, provide claim status updates, and help individuals file new claims.
