U.S. Department of Labor to Hold Medical Benefits Meetings in Arizona for Nuclear Workers

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor will hold informational meetings in Arizona for current and former nuclear weapons workers, or their survivors, on the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, will also be discussed.

Staff from the Department’s Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation will be available to assist eligible applicants in filing new claims or checking the status of existing claims. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Former Worker Medical Screening Program will also attend.

“Many former, retired, and current nuclear weapons workers living in Arizona may be eligible for benefits in these programs, but they haven’t filed a claim. This includes retirees who relocated to Arizona from other parts of the country,” said program Ombudsman Malcolm Nelson. “Our goal is to inform these workers or their survivors about the program, and to assist those eligible for benefits in filing their claim.”

EEOICPA provides compensation and medical benefits to eligible employees and former employees for occupational illnesses or deaths related to work exposures while employed at covered facilities. Eligible survivors may also be entitled to compensation. A searchable list of the covered facilities is available here.

Uranium miners, millers, and ore transporters covered by Section 5 of the RECA may be eligible for additional compensation under the EEOICPA.
