OSHA News Release: Legal Life Plans Inc. ordered to pay $119K in wages, damages to whistle-blowing worker fired after reporting securities fraud [09/03/2015]

DENVER — When an employee of a Utah based company discovered possible evidence of securities fraud, he spoke up about his internal investigations and concerns the company was making false representations to potential clients. The company responded by discharging him.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigated the employee's wrongful termination complaint filed in May 2013 and found that reporting the results of the securities fraud investigation and voicing concerns were factors in his dismissal.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas A 29-year-old man working at a Brownsville bowling alley died when his shirt collar tangled in a faulty pinsetter, strangling him as the machine twisted the collar tighter.

Hired part-time as a mechanic, Vidal Garcia had worked at Galaxy Bowling Center for four months before the accident on March 5, 2015. He was doing maintenance on an automatic bowling pinsetter, machine that picks up and clears fallen pins and sets them for the next bowler.

NEW YORK — For the second time in two years, a U.S. and international home decor manufacturer and distributor has shown that it lags in employee safety.

A U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection of New York-based Idea Nuova's 302 Fifth Ave. showroom found aisles clogged with merchandise, including beanbag chairs, and an emergency exit blocked by disco balls, desks and lamps, conditions that could prevent a swift workplace exit in an emergency.
