US Department of Labor, Georgia contractors to promote safety, health during Hartsfield-Jackson airport concourse widening project
Participants: U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Holder-Moody-Bryson-Sovereign, a joint venture
What: The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has signed a strategic, joint-venture partnership with an East Point, Georgia, construction company to promote worker safety and health during widening construction project of Concourse D at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the nation’s busiest.
Background: The partnership with the Holder-Moody-Bryson-Sovereign joint venture seeks to prevent worker injuries and reduce exposure to hazards using a contractor-government approach. The initiative will also assist contractors in creating and employing safety and health management systems, and delivering training to ensure employees, employers and supervisors understand how to remain safe and healthy. The Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute’s Safety, Health and Environmental Program is also supporting the partnership.
The project’s two primary components are the relocation of about 2,600 feet of existing water and sanitary lines and expanding the airport’s Concourse D by 359,000 square feet. The first airport to serve more than 100 million passengers in a single year, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the world’s leading passenger destinations. By some estimates, the complex has a $66 billion impact on the region’s economy.
OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program works with employers, employees, professional and trade associations, labor organizations and other stakeholders to establish specific goals, strategies and performance measures to improve worker safety and health.
Quote: “This public-private sector partnership will help workers, employers and others involved in the expansion of Concourse D at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to recognize and avoid the specific types of hazards that exist during major construction projects,” explained OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office Director Jeffery Stawowy in Atlanta. “Partnerships like these are proven methods for promoting best practices for workplace safety and health. Holder-Moody-Bryson-Sovereign’s commitment to keeping everyone involved in the project safe and healthy speaks volumes about the company’s priorities, and will help increase the likelihood that every worker on the project end their shift safely.”
