U.S. Department of Labor Cites New Jersey Contractor For Exposing Workers to Safety Hazards

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited GMG Brito Contractors LLC for exposing employees to fall and other safety hazards at a residential construction site in Lakewood, New Jersey. OSHA has proposed penalties totaling $127,436.

OSHA initiated an investigation after an inspector observed employees performing roofing activities without proper fall protection. OSHA found GMG Brito Contractors LLC exposed employees to fall hazards; allowed employees to work without hardhats, and eye and face protection; and permitted the use of damaged machines, electric cords, and ladders. OSHA cited the company for similar violations in 2013, 2014, and 2016

"GMG Brito Contractors LLC continues to disregard requirements to provide fall protection, leaving employees vulnerable to hazards that can cause serious or fatal injuries," said OSHA Marlton Area Office Director Paula Dixon-Roderick.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA's area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to help ensure these conditions for America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, education and assistance.
