Statement by Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis on the death of Sidney Harman

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today issued the following statement on the death of Sidney Harman:

"I extend my deepest sympathies to my dear friend and former colleague Jane Harman. I was heartbroken to hear of Sidney's death. She and their children and grandchildren are in my thoughts.

"Sidney Harman was 'quintessential LA' and 'quintessential DC.' That's what made him so special... he could navigate various worlds with ease, grace and humor.

"Most people knew Sidney as a successful businessman, philanthropist and arts patron. But among his many extraordinary accomplishments, he also had a distinguished career in public service, as deputy secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce during the Carter administration. He was an inspiration to countless young people at the time, including me, who believed that government work was a noble calling and a way to make your own unique contribution to the world.

"He will be missed. But his legacy – in so many real and important ways – will carry on for a very long time."
