Labor Department Achieves Highest Green Rating Under
Presidents Management Agenda for Financial Performance

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently achieved the highest rating for Financial Performance under the President's Management Agenda (PMA). The Labor Department is one of only four Cabinet-level departments and two federal agencies to achieve a score of green for Financial Performance. The latest scorecard issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) reflects progress for the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2004.

Once again, the Department of Labor has achieved results under the President's Management Agenda by emphasizing the importance of clear and accurate financial information as a basis for the Department's operating, budget and policy decisions, said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. The PMA sets high standards for performance, and the Department of Labor is continuing to meet that challenge and serve the American people.

President George W. Bush sent his PMA, a strategy for improving the management and performance of the federal government, to the Congress in the summer of 2001. Improving financial performance activities is one of the five critical areas for achieving results on the PMA.

The key reasons that DOL moved to green status for financial performance are improvements in providing accurate, timely and reliable financial information to managers and decision makers across the department. DOL's efforts to integrate financial and program performance information increase the accountability of the department's programs by delivering results effectively and efficiently.

OMB tracks the progress of 26 departments and major agencies for five government-wide initiatives aimed at improving results to citizens, including Strategic Management of Human Capital; Competitive Sourcing; Improved Financial Performance; Expanded Electronic Government; and Budget and Performance Integration.
