US Department of Labor awards $10.5M in grants to provide training, promote mine safety, health in 45 states, territories

Supports delivery of federally mandated miner training

WASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of $10.5 million in grants to organizations in 43 states, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands to provide safety and health training designed to reduce and prevent mining workers’ injuries and illnesses.

The department’s Mine Safety and Health Administration awarded the grants to support the delivery of federally mandated training and re-training for miners working at surface and underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines. Miners working in shell dredging or employed at surface stone, sand and gravel mining operations are also included.

“Training is critical to ensuring miners know and understand mining conditions and the potential hazards they may encounter on a mine site,” said Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Christopher J. Williamson. “These grants will help deliver training to thousands of miners, contractors and operators across the country and can make the difference between a safe and healthy day at work and a tragedy or illness.”

States and territories apply for the grants, which are awarded to state mine inspectors’ offices, state departments of labor and state-supported colleges and universities. Recipients tailor their training programs based on the needs of mines and miners in their areas, including mining conditions and hazards miners may encounter.
