US Department of Labor awards grant to support safe, quality jobs in Indonesia, Philippines
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of up to $6 million in grant funding for the Solidarity Center to advance quality jobs and labor rights in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Administered by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, the Promoting Quality Jobs in Infrastructure Development project will support safe, quality jobs on infrastructure project sites in Indonesia and the Philippines that are financed by multilateral development banks. Grant activities will strengthen the capacity of workers, unions and other key actors to support the implementation of multilateral development bank standards on labor and working conditions by empowering workers in collective bargaining efforts and partnering with employers, multilateral development banks and other stakeholders in these infrastructure project cycles.
The project is part of the Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Worker Empowerment, and Rights, an initiative to strengthen workplace democracy globally by supporting worker rights and empowerment through program and policy interventions. The project advances the goals of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment to drive job creation and guarantee respect for workers’ organizations and collective bargaining. Multilateral development bank infrastructure financing, accompanied by binding labor standards, is a crucial part of achieving sustainable development and shared prosperity.
