READOUT: US Department of Labor, US Trade Representative host trans-Atlantic trade, labor dialogue with union, business leaders
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative today participated in the first meeting of the trans-Atlantic tripartite Trade and Labor Dialogue.
Launched under the U.S.-European Union Trade and Technology Council, the dialogue allows participants to engage on trans-Atlantic trade and labor issues with government, labor and business stakeholders in the U.S. and Europe.
The dialogue was co-hosted by department’s Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Labor Joshua Kagan; Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Europe and Middle East Daniel Mullaney, European Commission Directorate General of Trade and Acting Deputy Director General Rupert Schlegelmilch, and European Commission Directorate General of Employment Stefan Olsson.
Representatives from the EU’s Directorates General for Trade and for Employment, and union and business leaders also joined the meeting to discuss the following:
- Challenges and policy approaches related to the future of work and the digital economy’s impacts on workers. These challenges include how to best protect workers amid rapid change and how digital trade affects workers.
- Exploring how to shield or support workers, consumers and businesses from inflationary pressure.
- Charting a path to concretely advance cooperation to benefit workers in the global economy.
