READOUT: Labor Department’s Deputy Undersecretary Lee, Vietnamese Minister Dung confirm future labor dialogue
WASHINGTON – On May 11, 2022, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee met with Vietnam’s Minister for Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Đào Ngọc Dung to discuss labor issues of mutual interest.
It was the first official visit by a Vietnamese labor minister to the U.S. since diplomatic relations were established in 1995. At the meeting, Deputy Undersecretary Lee and Minister Dung confirmed the resumption of the U.S.-Vietnam Labor Dialogue in 2022.
“We look forward to reconvening our bilateral labor dialogue,” said Deputy Undersecretary for International Labor Affairs Thea Lee. “This dialogue will serve as a forum for discussing many topics of mutual interest, including supply chains, workforce development, industrial relations, efforts to eliminate child labor and implementation of Vietnam’s new labor code.”
The dialogue will be held at the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in Hanoi. A final date for the dialogue will be confirmed later in 2022.
The two parties also discussed the implementation of Vietnam’s new labor code and the New Industrial Relations Framework project – funded by the department’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs – and the Technical Support for Enhancing National Capacity to Prevent and Reduce Child Labor in Vietnam project, which aims to prevent and reduce the use of child labor in Vietnam.
