The U.S. National Administrative Office (NAO) of the Department of Labor and the Mexican National Administrative Office of the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare will jointly host a public seminar on union registration and certification procedures in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on Feb. 29 and March 1.
This is the third and final in a series of public seminars agreed to by the Secretaries of Labor of the U.S., Canada and Mexico, to address issues in the U.S. NAO's public report on the complaint concerning Magneticos de Mexico, a subsidiary of the Sony Corp.
The complaint raised industrial relations issues and was filed with the U.S. NAO under the North American Agreement for Labor Cooperation (NAALC), frequently referred to as the labor supplemental agreement of NAFTA.
The first seminar involved government representatives engaged in the union registration and certification process in each country, and was held in Mexico City on Sept. 14-15, 1995. The second seminar involved independent experts on the laws governing union registration and certification in each country, and took place in San Antonio, Texas, on Nov. 8-9, 1995. The agendas for these seminars focused on the relevant law, procedures and structures which exist in each country addressing the issues of union registration and certification.
The upcoming trinational seminar is tripartite and will involve panelists representing government, labor and management. The seminar, to be held at the Ancira Radisson Hotel in Downtown Monterrey, will be open to the public and the media.
