LABOR AND STATE DEPARTMENTS HOST SYMPOSIUM ON LABOR TRENDS IN CHINA

The labor market in China is undergoing a great many changes which have implications throughout that country's social, legal and political spheres. The Department of Labor and the Department of State will jointly host a symposium Friday, Sept., 22 to consider those changes and emerging employment trends in China. This symposium is held by the Labor Department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs as part of its mission to study and monitor foreign labor trends.

The one-day symposium will focus on the situations of workers and employers. Topics will include workforce participation of women, labor migration, the declining role of state enterprises as employers and the role of the state trade union. There will also be discussions on wage trends, reemployment policies and the social safety net.

Symposium participants will be representatives of international organizations, academia, labor and business, including the World Bank and the International Labor Organization. Introductory remarks will be made by the Labor Department's Deputy Under Secretary of Labor for International Affairs Joaquin Otero and Assistant Secretary of State John Shattuck.

The symposium will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium at the Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.
