Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report

In the week ending October 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 787,000, a decrease of 55,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 56,000 from 898,000 to 842,000. The 4-week moving average was 811,250, a decrease of 21,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 33,500 from 866,250 to 832,750.

Statement by Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employment and Training Administration John Pallasch on Weekly Unemployment Claims

WASHINGTON, DC – Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employment and Training Administration John Pallasch issued the following statement regarding Weekly Unemployment Claims:

“As Americans continue to return to work, today’s report showed a huge decrease of one million individuals coming off of unemployment insurance rolls. The four week average initial weekly claim numbers, which takes out much of the volatility of weekly claims, hit the lowest point since the start of the pandemic.

The previous week's level was revised up by 5,000 from 840,000 to 845,000. The 4-week moving average was 866,250, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 1,250 from 857,000 to 858,250.

U.S. Department of Labor Announces Phased Reopening Of Job Corps Campuses

WASHINGTON, DCThe U.S. Department of Labor today announced plans for the national reopening of Job Corps campuses with select centers welcoming students starting Oct. 20, 2020.

Each Job Corps Center, subject to national office oversight, will determine the best approach to resume on-site operations ensuring the health and welfare of the students and staff. Not all Job Corps campuses will resume physical operations at the same time.

U.S. Department of Labor Awards Over $40 Million in Grants Through Trade Adjustment Assistance Program

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. Department of Labor announced the award of nearly $41 million in grants to 47 states and Puerto Rico through the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program. WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor recently awarded approximately $22 million in contract investments to 12 Industry Intermediaries to continue the Department’s efforts to expand the number of apprenticeship opportunities in growing sectors across the country.

This effort will further Registered Apprenticeship expansion strategies in high growth industries including information technology (IT), cybersecurity, telecommunications and 5G advanced manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare and health IT, transportation and logistics, and energy.
