U.S. Department of Labor Awards Additional Funding to North Carolina For Continued Hurricane Florence Recovery

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor today approved additional funding for a Disaster Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grant (DWG) awarded to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.  The funding allows for assessing workforce needs in response to Hurricane Florence, which hit the state in September 2018.

The Department awarded initial funding in September 2018, following the issuance of a Federal Emergency Management Agency major disaster declaration covering 18 counties in North Carolina. The state requested additional funds to continue the work in progress, with a focus on the hardest-hit counties of Robeson, Bladen, Hoke, Scotland, and Richmond.

Supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014, Dislocated Worker Grants temporarily expand the service capacity of dislocated worker training and employment programs at the state and local levels by providing funding assistance in response to large, unexpected economic events that cause significant job losses.
