Assistance for pharmaceutical industry workers in Massachusetts announced by US Labor Department

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $169,813 National Emergency Grant incremental award to continue providing re-employment services to workers affected by the closure of Alaunus Pharmaceutical LLC, Ameridose LLC, Medical Sales Management Inc. and New England Compounding Center, all of which were located in east-central Massachusetts.

"With so many of the workers impacted by the closure of these pharmaceutical firms continuing to rely on crucial re-employment services to take the next step in their careers, this funding provides for ongoing assistance in a timely and uninterrupted manner," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Portia Wu.

This incremental funding is being awarded to Massachusetts' Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The Metro South/West Employment and Training Administration will manage the provision of re-employment services to the affected workers in the immediate vicinity of these pharmaceutical facilities. In addition, a vouchering component is available to permit these individuals to access services at other American Job Centers within close proximity to their homes.

The grant was approved for up to $2,545,954, with $1,145,679 released initially, on June 20, 2013, to begin services to approximately 320 workers affected by the closures. Today's incremental funding of $169,813 brings the total funds awarded for this project to $1,315,492. Additional funding, up to the amount approved, will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
