Workers affected by the closure of the Swank distribution center
in Taunton, Mass., to receive assistance from the US Department of Labor

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,064,609 National Emergency Grant to assist approximately 120 workers affected by the closure of the Swank Inc. distribution center located in Taunton, Massachusetts.

"When a local employer shuts its doors, it's important that workers have the resources they need to quickly find new employment," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "The federal grant we're awarding today will help these workers get the skills and certifications they need for jobs in growing industries."

The recipient of this grant, Massachusetts' Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, will work with the Bristol Workforce Investment Board to administer re-employment services, which will include: adult education courses, including English as a Second Language, to earn a high school diploma or equivalent; career coaching and case management; job search workshops; resume preparation and interviewing practice; and skills development workshops. These services are designed to expedite the affected workers' re-employment in the region's high-demand sectors, including health care, heating and plumbing, information technology and the skilled trades.

Of the $1,064,609 announced today, $560,784 will be released initially. Additional funding, up to the amount approved, will be made available as the commonwealth demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
