Mass. workers affected by layoffs from four companies in Middlesex County to receive assistance from the US Labor Department

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced an $876,300 National Emergency Grant to assist approximately 120 workers affected by layoffs at four companies in Middlesex County, Mass.

"Many of the affected workers will now need to pursue new certifications or training to find employment in today's competitive economy," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "This grant will provide these workers the services they need to find a new career in the expanding sectors of advanced manufacturing, health care and information technology."

This grant, awarded to Massachusetts's Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, will provide intensive employment services to the workers affected by the layoffs. The Metro North Regional Employment Board will administer these re-employment services, including: career coaching and case management, job search workshops, resume preparation and interviewing, and skills development workshops. The workers receiving re-employment services through this grant were employed by one of the following companies: Bank of America Corp., Macy's Inc., EMD Millipore Corp. and The Inn at Harvard.

Of the $876,300 announced today, $624,013 will be released initially. Additional funding, up to the amount approved, will be made available as the commonwealth demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
