UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending September 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 382,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 367,000. The 4-week moving average was 375,000, an increase of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 371,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending September 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending September 1 was 3,283,000, a decrease of 49,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,332,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,316,500, a decrease of 7,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,324,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 297,402 in the week ending September 8, a decrease of 12,058 from the previous week. There were 328,868 initial claims in the comparable week in 2011.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending September 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,912,245, a decrease of 173,235 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 3,293,105.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending August 25 was 5,391,576, a decrease of 78,465 from the previous week. There were 7,143,572 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2011
Extended Benefits were not available in any states during the week ending August 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,225 in the week ending September 1, a decrease of 3 from the prior week. There were 2,539 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 126 from the preceding week.
There were 17,428 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending August 25, an increase of 331 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,405, a decrease of 536 from the prior week.
States reported 2,223,071 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending August 25, a decrease of 40,543 from the prior week. There were 3,066,671 persons claiming EUC in the comparable week in 2011. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending August 25 were in Puerto Rico (4.0), New Jersey (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.8), Alaska (3.6), Connecticut (3.6), Virgin Islands (3.5), California (3.3), New York (3.1), Rhode Island (3.1), and Oregon (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending September 1 were in Pennsylvania (+1,639), Nevada (+1,351), Michigan (+915), Texas (+804), and Iowa (+691), while the largest decreases were in Florida (-1,923), North Carolina (-1,566), Georgia (-1,199), Puerto Rico (-1,101), and New Jersey (-789).
