Secretary of labor announces 27 appointments to 2012 Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship
WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced six new appointments and 21 reappointments of members to the Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship. The committee is charged with expanding apprenticeships into all sectors of the economy and building partnerships that increase apprenticeship opportunities for Americans.
"As we begin to celebrate the 75th anniversary of federal support of apprenticeship programs, it is my pleasure to announce the new members of the Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship," said Secretary Solis. "Apprenticeships serve as an important avenue into a growing number of career pathways, and the committee's work will help to enhance and expand that role."
The Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship is comprised of 27 members and includes leaders from throughout the Registered Apprenticeship system and its partners, including the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, the National Association of State and Territorial Apprenticeship Directors, the National Association of Governmental Labor Officials, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Education. Secretary Solis selected Daniel Villao, state director of the California Construction Academy, a project of the University of California-Los Angeles Labor Center, to chair the committee, on which he serves as a representative of the public.
The mission of the committee is to provide advice and recommendations on the development and implementation of policies, legislation and regulations affecting apprenticeship; the preparation of the American workforce for sustained employment through employment and training programs; the development of measures to foster quality workplaces that are safe, healthy and fair; and strategies that meet the competitive labor demands of a global economy.
This August will mark the 75th anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act of 1937, which led to the establishment of the Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship.
