US Department of Labor announces grant increment to continue assisting workers impacted by base realignments and closures in Washington state

WASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Labor today awarded a $2,736,650 National Emergency Grant increment to continue providing re-employment and job training services to approximately 900 military spouses and civilian defense workers in Washington state who were impacted by decisions of the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission. The commission consolidated Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base to create Joint Base Lewis-McChord, which serves the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines.

"The Labor Department plays an important role in assisting communities impacted by base realignments and closures," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Today's award will provide continued crucial job placement assistance, skills training and other re-employment services to help displaced workers launch new careers."

On Jan. 20, 2011, the Department of Labor approved a National Emergency Grant for up to $4,840,359, with $2,103,709 released initially. Today's increment, awarded to the Washington State Employment Security Department, represents the second and final increment of the total amount awarded.
