SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending February 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 358,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 373,000. The 4-week moving average was 366,250, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised average of 377,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending January 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 28, was 3,515,000, an increase of 64,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,451,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,498,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,531,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 397,810 in the week ending February 4, a decrease of 24,477 from the previous week. There were 440,706 initial claims in the comparable week in 2011.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.2 percent during the week ending January 28, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,084,606, an increase of 26,370 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.7 percent and the volume was 4,605,543.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending January 21 was 7,663,205, an increase of 7,982 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin during the week ending January 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,696 in the week ending January 28, a decrease of 476 from the prior week. There were 2,843 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 395 from the preceding week.
There were 29,814 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending January 21, a decrease of 1,148 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 42,562, an increase of 66 from the prior week.
States reported 2,985,907 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending January 21, a decrease of 21,789 from the prior week. There were 3,756,990 claimants in the comparable week in 2011. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending January 21 were in Alaska (7.0), Oregon (4.9), Wisconsin (4.8), Montana (4.7), Idaho (4.6), Pennsylvania (4.5), Rhode Island (4.5), New Jersey (4.3), Connecticut (4.2), and Puerto Rico (4.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending January 28 were in California (+4,571), Washington (+2,795), Florida (+2,293), Texas (+1,485), and Oregon (+1,420), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-1,855), Connecticut (-1,523), Oklahoma (-1,353), Alabama (-1,297), and North Carolina (-1,221).
