US Department of Labor announces new grant to continue assisting Idaho workers impacted by call center layoffs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $277,617 National Emergency Grant supplemental award to continue providing training and re-employment services to about 200 workers affected by layoffs resulting from the closure of the Dell Inc.'s call center in Twin Falls, Idaho.

"As the economy of Twin Falls begins to grow, properly trained workers will be a key to business success and expansion," said Jane Oates, assistant secretary of the department's Employment and Training Administration. "This grant will give former employees of Dell the training they need to upgrade their job skills for the region's in-demand industries."

The supplemental funds are being awarded to the Idaho Department of Labor. On Feb. 23, 2010, a grant was approved for up to $1,324,672, with $614,808 released initially. The remaining $709,864 was approved for release on Dec. 3, 2010. The supplement announced today brings the total amount awarded to $1,602,289.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
