SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending August 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 408,000, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 399,000. The 4-week moving average was 402,500, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 406,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending August 6, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending August 6 was 3,702,000, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,695,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,716,000, a decrease of 4,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,720,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 342,669 in the week ending August 13, a decrease of 11,739 from the previous week. There were 405,484 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending August 6, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,535,364, a decrease of 45,069 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4 percent and the volume was 4,281,074.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending July 30 was 7,336,178, a decrease of 143,737 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin during the week ending July 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 3,544 in the week ending August 6, an increase of 399 from the prior week. There were 2,954 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 303 from the preceding week.
There were 26,134 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 30, an increase of 1,408 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 37,627, a decrease of 641 from the prior week.
States reported 3,130,608 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending July 30, a decrease of 27,704 from the prior week. There were 4,694,058 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 30 were in Puerto Rico (4.7), Pennsylvania (4.3), California (3.9), New Jersey (3.9), Alaska (3.8) , Connecticut (3.8), Oregon (3.7), Rhode Island (3.7), Nevada (3.5) and Arizona (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 6 were in California (+7,848), Texas (+1,374), North Carolina (+1,176), Illinois (+988), and Massachusetts (+926) while the largest decreases were in Florida (-2,580), Puerto Rico (-1,705), Indiana (-900), Oregon (-544), and Kentucky (-487 ).
