US Department of Labor announces National Emergency Grant to assist Wisconsin manufacturing workers affected by layoffs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $918,010 National Emergency Grant to provide an array of services to about 325 workers being affected by layoffs at Polaris Industries in Osceola, Wis., and Robin Manufacturing U.S.A. Inc. in Hudson, Wis., to assist them in gaining new employment.

"The majority of workers being displaced from Polaris Industries and Robin Manufacturing have been at the same factory jobs for many years," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "That longevity, along with other factors, makes it important for the government to assist these workers so they may upgrade their skill sets to meet the needs of growing industries. Advanced manufacturing and health care are among this region's most in-demand fields."

Layoffs at the Polaris facility, where all-terrain vehicles are manufactured, began earlier this year and will continue through December. Robin Manufacturing, which produced small engines for all-terrain vehicles, closed last month.

This grant is being awarded to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. As a supplement to training benefits provided under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, it will offer eligible workers industry-related basic skills and entrepreneurial training, among other services.
