Special Factor: Minnesota has indicated that approximately 2,500 of their reported initial claims are a result of state employees filing due to the state government shutdown.
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending July 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 418,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 432,000. The 4-week moving average was 424,750, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 427,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 25, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 3.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 25 was 3,681,000, a decrease of 43,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,724,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,705,250, a decrease of 3,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,709,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 416,798 in the week ending July 2, an increase of 10,165 from the previous week. There were 470,366 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending June 25, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,526,384, an increase of 14,968 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4 percent and the volume was 4,309,375.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending June 18 was 7,459,561, a decrease of 61,327 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia, during the week ending June 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,335 in the week ending June 25, a decrease of 38 from the prior week. There were 2,766 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 182 from the preceding week.
There were 23,936 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 18, an increase of 1,572 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 36,616, a decrease of 100 from the prior week.
States reported 3,256,523 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending June 18, a decrease of 44,183 from the prior week. There were 4,160,150 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 18 were in Puerto Rico (4.7), Alaska (4.2), Pennsylvania (4.0), Oregon (3.9), California (3.7), Nevada (3.6), Arizona (3.4), Connecticut (3.4), Illinois (3.4), and New Jersey (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 25 were in New Jersey (+6,827), California (+5,375), Massachusetts (+3,816), New York (+2,591), and Connecticut (+2,097) while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-4,974), Puerto Rico (-1,332), North Carolina (-1,316), Georgia (-975) and the Virgin Islands (-927).
