US Department of Labor awards grant increment to continue assistance for autoworkers in Fremont, Calif.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $7,959,373 National Emergency Grant increment to continue to provide re-employment and training services to about 4,455 workers affected by the closure of New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. of Fremont, Calif., and 39 of its supplier companies.

"Today's grant will result in continued support services and job training for auto industry workers in Fremont who lost their jobs through no fault of their own," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "As our economy continues to improve, this grant will benefit employers, too, by providing grant participants with the skills and credentials that match 21st century needs."

On June 3, 2010, a grant was approved for up to $19,042,012, with $11,082,639 released initially. Awarded to the California Employment Development Department, this second and final increment provides dislocated workers, many of whom also are eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance, with access to comprehensive support serves that include dependent care and transportation assistance. Workers of supplier companies whose TAA petitions were denied have access to a full array of training and employment-related services under this grant.
