SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending June 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 414,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 430,000. The 4-week moving average was 424,750, unchanged from the previous week's revised average of 424,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 4, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 4 was 3,675,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,696,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,709,000, a decrease of 15,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,724,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 394,910 in the week ending June 11, an increase of 28,094 from the previous week. There were 448,305 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending June 4, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,465,277, an increase of 38,932 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4 percent and the volume was 4,319,021.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending May 28 was 7,401,228, a decrease of 209,116 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia, during the week ending May 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,778 in the week ending June 4, a decrease of 364 from the prior week. There were 2,422 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 106 from the preceding week.
There were 21,564 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 28, a decrease of 1,771 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 35,559, a decrease of 702 from the prior week.
States reported 3,293,507 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending May 28, a decrease of 87,583 from the prior week. There were 4,798,099 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 28 were in Alaska (4.9 percent), Puerto Rico (4.5), Oregon (4.1), Pennsylvania (3.9), Nevada (3.5), New Jersey (3.5), Virgin Islands (3.5), California (3.4), Connecticut (3.4), Arkansas (3.2), Idaho (3.2), Illinois (3.2), and Mississippi (3.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 4 were in Wisconsin (+1,528), Tennessee (+1,055), Illinois (+755), New Mexico (+659), Indiana (+539), while the largest decreases were in New York (-4,060), California (-2,510), Massachusetts (-1,846), Georgia (-1,256), and Florida (-1,240).
