US Department of Labor announces grant to assist workers affected by layoffs at Maine Military Authority
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $463,083 National Emergency Grant to provide training and re-employment services to about 75 workers affected by layoffs at Maine Military Authority in Limestone, Maine.
"This grant will provide affected workers in Maine with access to services that will help them in preparing for good jobs in the state's growing industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.
Awarded to the Maine Department of Labor, this grant will be operated by the Aroostook/Washington Counties Workforce Investment Board. The funds will be used to prepare workers for positions in high-growth sectors in the area, including health care and social assistance, leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and retail trade.
Layoffs from Maine Military Authority occurred on March 1. The company refurbishes military vehicles and equipment.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG.
