SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Feb. 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 368,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 388,000. The 4-week moving average was 388,500, a decrease of 12,750 from the previous week's revised average of 401,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 3.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb.19 was 3,774,000, a decrease of 59,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,833,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,863,750, a decrease of 40,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,904,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 351,076 in the week ending Feb. 26, a decrease of 30,029 from the previous week. There were 471,256 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.4 percent during the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,325,502, a decrease of 262,110 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 4.3 percent and the volume was 5,597,500.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending Feb 12 was 9,236,041.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, during the week ending Feb 12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,793 in the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 178 from the prior week. There were 2,296 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 56 from the preceding week.
There were 46,303 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 12, an increase of 714 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 40,570, an increase of 72 from the prior week.
States reported 3,653,267 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending Feb. 12, a decrease of 32,094 from the prior week. There were 5,685,912 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 12 were in Alaska (7.0 percent), Montana (5.5), Pennsylvania (5.5), Idaho (5.3), Puerto Rico (5.2), Rhode Island (5.2), Wisconsin (5.1), Oregon (5.0), Illinois (4.8), and New Jersey (4.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 19 were in Illinois (+530), Oregon (+339), Tennessee (+225), Alaska (+191), and Vermont (+186), while the largest decreases were in New York (-4,270), Pennsylvania (-3,842), Wisconsin (-3,163), Kentucky (-2,641), and Florida (-2,613).
