US Department of Labor assists more than 800 civilian defense workers and spouses in Washington state impacted by Base Realignment and Closure

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $4,840,359 National Emergency Grant to assist about 825 military spouses and civilian defense workers impacted by a 2005 Base Realignment and Closure action that resulted in the creation of Joint Base Lewis McChord in the state of Washington.

"Military spouses and civilians who support defense activities play crucial roles in ensuring the security of our nation," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Helping these individuals get back to work when jobs are eliminated or moved elsewhere is good for the economy and is simply the right thing to do."

Today's grant, awarded to the Washington State Employment Security Department, will fund strategies to minimize the time BRAC-impacted workers are unemployed and to assist them in upgrading their skills to prepare for new careers. The workers will be offered services including skills assessment, career counseling, job training and job placement. In addition, these funds will assist the state in identifying skill gaps in new and emerging industries critical to the economic growth of the region.

Of the $4,840,359 announced today, $2,103,709 will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.
