US Department of Labor announces $330,000 grant to assist workers in Michigan affected by manufacturing industry layoffs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $330,000 grant to assist about 60 workers affected by layoffs at Terex Handlers in Baraga, Mich.

"The state has been hit hard by this recession, and I want to ensure that dislocated workers are given the tools they need to train and prepare for new occupations that will lead to good and permanent jobs," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Today's grant will help these Michigan workers find new jobs in expanding sectors of the state's economy."

Awarded to the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, this grant will be operated by Western U.P. Michigan Works. The grant will provide affected workers with access to dislocated worker services, which may include skills assessment, basic skills training, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.

A Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth analysis indicates possible job vacancies in the auto technology; construction; commercial transportation; heavy equipment operation; heating, ventilating and air conditioning repair; law enforcement; medical; operations engineering and utility technician fields.

In December 2009, Terex Handlers, a manufacturer of construction equipment, issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice announcing the permanent closure of its facility in Baraga. Layoffs took place between Dec. 11, 2009, and May 7, 2010.
